Dedicated to Excellence

Meet the professionals who lead our mission.

Our volunteer organization is led by a dedicated group of professionals in the field of music and music education. Through their expertise and dedication to excellence, we are able to provide our community with first-level musical performances that enrich lives and spread joy.

Michael Slon, Music Director

Active as a conductor of choral, orchestral, and operatic repertoire, Michael Slon has served as Music Director of The Oratorio Society of Virginia since 2011. In that time, he has created a series of new artistic partnerships with the chorus, including a 2014 semi-staged production of Bernstein's Candide with Ash Lawn (now Charlottesville) Opera, performances with the Roanoke Symphony, Staunton Music Festival, Charlottesville Ballet, and regional youth choruses, an Adolphus Hailstork-Rita Dove commission for the group's 50th anniversary, and an annual “Together in Song” community event to benefit local charities.

Christine Fairfield, Executive Director

Christine Fairfield joined The Oratorio Society of Virginia as a singer in 2021 and assumed the role of Executive Director beginning in 2022. An accomplished soloist, Christine also brings decades of choral singing experience and seven years of administrative experience. She is a frequent soloist with ensembles throughout the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. As an educator, Christine has served on the faculty at Bridgewater College and now teaches voice at Washington & Lee University. Christine holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music with a concentration in voice from Eastern Mennonite University and a Master of Music in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from Ohio University’s School of Music. She continued her post-graduate vocal studies with teachers Sunny Joy Langton, Timothy Noble, Christine Schadeberg, Stellario Faggone, and currently, Byron Jones. As a lifetime musician and music educator, Christine believes in the role that music-making plays in building relationships and engaging communities’ creative passions to bring people together. It is her hope that she can support The Oratorio Society’s continued mission to bring excellent choral music performances to Charlottesville and central Virginia.
